Backflow
The city of Toronto, as well as other surrounding counties and the GTA,
have recently begun to enforce a new backflow prevention program as of
January 2008. This requires all multi-residential, institutional, and commercial
facilities to install a Backflow prevention device (BFP) on their main cold water
service line. The device must be installed directly after the water meter, though
outside of the by-pass loop, and with no other connections between the device
and the meter. This is called "premise isolation", in which the building has now
been isolated from the cities potable water supply. This device prevents any
water from flowing backward out of the building and into the cities supply.
In some cases, the backflow of water would not be harmful to anyone but,
for example, if a building has a chemical loop attached to their heating units and
that water flowed back into the domestic water and further into the cities supply, it
could cause serious illness or even death to surrounding residents.
